Book Review

The plot definitely thickens in this third installment of the ‘Sci-Regency’ series, though the series arc is more of a background setting and I ended up with more questions than answers at the end of the book. J.L. Langley has done a great job pulling me even more deeply into this world with its Regency-era society that exists in the far future – aristocracy and monarchs are in charge of entire planets, military careers start in the Intergalactic Navy and continue in planetary military forces, and societal restrictions and morals are very much an accepted part of life. Picking up where ‘The Englor Affair’ left off, this time the focus is on Prince Colton, third son of Regelence’s ruling couple, and Sebastian, captain of the Royal Guard and a viscount with a dark secret in his past. A scandal forces them much closer than either man is comfortable with at first, but it forces both of them to reconsider some basic assumptions about life and each other.

Sebastian is a consummate rake, what we’d call a player, and he couldn’t care less how many scandals he causes. On the contrary – he likes making people raise their eyebrows. The one thing he is totally serious about is his job – and it is more than a handful. Trying to keep the royals in check and safe, especially the mischievous princes, could drive anyone crazy, but Sebastian is as dedicated as he is determined not to let anything happen to them.

Colton fell in love with Sebastian when he was thirteen, but has always been rebuffed. Now that he is twenty-one, he decides enough is enough – they are obviously not meant to be. Instead he decides to focus on his dream of becoming a horse breeder, much to the shock of his royal fathers. What even they do not suspect is the danger Colton puts himself in by dealing with total strangers, not all of whom are honest or honorable as Colton expects.

Set on planet Regelence at the end of 4830, this is a character-driven adventure filled with miscommunication, angst, power plays, and dark machinations that keep both men on their toes. Their romance, once a scandal means they have to marry to save Colton’s reputation, is not easy. Sebastian doesn’t even want to be married, never mind fall in love, not after his previous disastrous experience. Colton wants nothing more than a love match, but has no clue how to go about getting it with someone who can’t seem to be honest with him. Sebastian’s secret almost causes them to break up, and I was holding my breath in reaction to the tension between them and all the interference they had to face. What a ride!

If you like imaginative visions of the future that bring back aspects of the past but put them in an entirely new context, if you want to watch two men who have danced around each other for years finally come together, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with lots of angst, suspense, political intrigue, and some really hot man-on-man action, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. The next installment looks like it will be published in a few months and I can’t wait!
