Book Blurb

A cop protecting his witness… It’s all business until desire becomes stronger than rules or self-control.

Detective Matt Blackburn and addiction counselor Josh Braidshaw first crossed paths at the LGBTQ+ youth shelter where they both volunteered. There was mutual attraction and plenty of flirtation, but Josh’s relationship kept anything from happening beyond that.

The duo is again thrown together when Josh is attacked while witnessing a young boy from the shelter being kidnapped. Matt puts Josh under his personal protection and things heat up, now that both men are free. Josh wants his normal life back and Matt isn’t keen to lose his career by crossing a professional line, but their close quarters and the heat that simmers between them might cause them both to change their priorities.

Reader advisory: This book contains references to drug use and addition, as well as injuries sustained during a kidnapping. There are also scenes of violence.

Publisher's Note: This book was previously released in the Hard Evidence anthology, September 2020.

Book Review

I truly enjoyed this read. It is not a super long book but it had just enough to it to suck me in and leave me wishing it had been longer.

Matt has been a detective for just a short time after being promoted from a beat cop. He is loving his new position. He even likes his partner, Julie. The only downfall to having her as a partner is that she is on a mission to find him a man. She wants him to be as happy in his home life as she is. Matt has pretty much pushed his personal life to the backside of his career. He does not want just a hookup and that is what most men seem to want.

When information of the cartel being in the area comes in, Matt and Julie head to Matt’s old beat and a shelter that Matt has helped out in. Once they get there, Min, who runs the shelter, is super excited to see Matt. It has been a while since he has been to the shelter, so the warm welcome is amazing. Min joins cohorts with Julie and tries to stress the fact that Josh, one of the volunteers, is now on the market and the two of them would be great together.

Josh loves helping at the shelter. He loves helping those who need help with substance abuse to get clean and start over again. When one of his regulars is not at the meeting, he begins to worry about Victor. After mentioning his absence to others and no one knowing what happened to Victor, Josh hopes that he will turn up soon. This happens a lot sooner than Josh expected because while leaving the shelter for the night, Josh notices Victor fighting with some men not far from work. Josh immediately jumps out trying to help but instead puts himself in danger.

With the new danger too close to Josh, Matt takes him to his home to try to keep him safe. How is having two men who are attracted to each other in the same home going to work out? Will Matt be able to figure out where Victor is and keep Josh safe at the same time?

This was such an incredible read. I loved every minute of it! I look forward to more books by Cheryl Dragon in the future!
